Shelf life - Storing coffee beans: Tips for the best taste

Haltbarkeit - Aufbewahrung von Kaffeebohnen: Tipps für den besten Geschmack

Planting, cultivating, harvesting, roasting – it takes a lot of effort to get coffee from the plant to the cup. How a shame it would be if the enjoyment were spoiled "at the last mile" by improper storage. But don't worry – with these tips, you can keep your coffee deliciously fresh and long-lasting at home:

The shelf life of coffee beans varies depending on the type and storage. Green coffee beans often stay fresh for several years in an airtight container in a cool, dry place. Roasted coffee should be consumed within 2-4 weeks after roasting to preserve its aroma. Ground coffee loses its freshness more quickly and should be used within 1-2 weeks after grinding. Protect the beans from light, air, and moisture to extend their shelf life. Please note that quality decreases over time, even if the coffee is still safe.

Consume quickly

Buy coffee in quantities that you will consume in the foreseeable future: whole beans within 3 months of roasting, ground coffee within 10-14 days.

Storing opened coffee

Store the coffee in its original packaging and close the aroma valve bag immediately after removal using the zip closure. Why? Because aroma escapes with every contact with air. You can prevent this by pressing out the excess air and thus the oxygen through the aroma valve when closing the packaging.

Storing unopened coffee

Here, the storage temperature should be just under 20 degrees Celsius. Please also avoid moisture during storage. Leave the opened product in its original packaging. If you wish, you can additionally place it in a coffee tin – but under no circumstances should you pour it out. Please also do not place the packaging in the sun or in the spice rack: coffee very easily absorbs other odors.

Store coffee in the refrigerator?

It's probably an urban myth – but we say clearly: No! Coffee quickly absorbs numerous other odors in the refrigerator. In addition, condensation can collect in the coffee bag due to temperature differences.

Can I freeze coffee?

If it cannot be avoided, you can also freeze coffee beans and thus preserve them for a long time. Important: Do not simply put the packaging in the freezer, but pour the beans into an airtight container. When thawing, make sure that the beans remain in the airtight container and thaw at normal room temperature.

How long do coffee beans last?

A saying about champagne goes: The best time to drink it is now. The same applies to our coffees. Because with every day and every opening of the packaging, they lose a little aroma, which in turn diminishes the enjoyment. We therefore recommend consuming the coffee quickly after opening. Nevertheless, it lasts longer – we have printed a best-before date for you on every package.
