History of Hazelnuts in Coffee

The enjoyment of coffee has a long and impressive history. But when and where did the coffee enjoyment with hazelnut flavor begin?

Historical Overview

It is difficult to pinpoint the exact time and place where hazelnut was first added to coffee. However, it can be noted that flavored coffees, especially specialty flavored coffee, gained popularity in the 20th century in the USA. The combination of the full flavor of the coffee beans and the sweet, nutty aroma of hazelnut quickly became a hit.

Cultural Significance of Hazelnuts in Different Countries

Hazelnut coffee, or as some call it, “hazelnut coffee,” has found many admirers worldwide. In Europe, countries like Italy and France are particularly known for their love of flavored coffee. Here, it is often enjoyed as part of a cappuccino or latte macchiato.

Negrisa is a traditional and self-sufficient farm. This means that no external drying beds or external mills are needed for processing. All processes related to harvesting, preparation, processing, and drying of the coffee take place on the plantation. It is precisely this attention to detail and the quality of each individual step in the processing that have made the farm known far beyond the borders of Peru.

Where is the coffee grown?
The organic coffee from Finca Negrisa is grown on a plantation between the villages of Villa Rica and Pichanaki in the province of Chanchamayo at an altitude of 1,400 to 1,800 meters above sea level. The Arabica Typica variety is processed using the washed method. The coffee was awarded 84 points on the SCA scale, as well as the highest rating – GRADE 1 – and is UTZ, ORGANIC EU, and BIO LATINA certified.

Production Process

The production of hazelnut coffee is a careful and well-considered process that brings out the best in the whole bean.

First, high-quality beans are selected. These beans are then roasted, with many roasters preferring a medium roast to preserve the natural flavor of the bean while leaving room for the hazelnut aroma. After the beans have been roasted, the refinement begins. Here, depending on the preparation method, the beans are infused with hazelnut aroma. This can be done by bathing them in hazelnut oil or by dusting them with hazelnut powder. Some coffee roasters also offer coffee blends where the beans are combined with other nut varieties, such as macadamia, to create a complex flavor profile.

The Importance of Natural vs. Artificial Flavors

When it comes to flavored coffee, the quality of the flavor is crucial to how the coffee tastes. Natural flavors, extracted from real hazelnuts, offer a more authentic and richer taste experience. In contrast, artificial flavors can sometimes have an undesirable aftertaste or overpower the natural aroma. The commitment to natural flavors is reflected in the quality of the final product – a coffee that is both pure and aromatic.

How to Choose the Best Hazelnut Coffee?

There are some key criteria that can help you make an informed decision.

Tips for Selecting High-Quality Hazelnut Coffee Beans

  1. Choose Arabica beans: These are known for their mild and aromatic taste. High-quality hazelnut coffee should be made from these beans.
  2. Check packaging information: Look closely at the packaging. A freshness valve ensures that the beans stay fresh while allowing gas to escape. Size options such as 250g and 1000g can be chosen depending on your needs.
  3. Pay attention to the roast level: A gentle roasting process, such as gentle roasting, preserves the natural notes of the bean and complements the hazelnut aroma perfectly. Check the packaging information for clues about the roast level.
  4. Avoid artificial additives: Read the ingredient list and choose only those that use natural flavors.

Importance of Freshness and Roast Level

Freshness is crucial in the coffee universe. Fresh beans and vacuum-sealed coffee offer a more intense and purer taste experience. The freshness valve (in our case, aroma bag) on the packaging can be an indicator of the care the manufacturer puts into preserving freshness.

The roast level significantly influences the taste. While a dark roast brings out stronger, robust notes, a medium roast emphasizes the natural flavors of the bean and the added hazelnut aroma.

Whether you enjoy your hazelnut coffee as a cappuccino, latte macchiato, or simply black – choosing the right product is crucial for an optimal taste experience.

Perfect Preparation

The art of preparing an exquisite hazelnut coffee lies in both the quality of the beans and the technique of preparation.

The Best Methods for Preparing Hazelnut Coffee

  1. Correct amount: For an optimal taste experience, we recommend using about 7-9g of coffee powder per cup with 85-90°C hot water.
  2. Pay attention to water temperature: The water should ideally be between 85-90°C. Water that is too hot can over-extract the coffee and make it bitter.
  3. Coffee machine or pour-over: A well-maintained coffee machine can deliver great results. However, the pour-over method, where you pour water over the coffee grounds in a controlled stream, can also wonderfully highlight the aroma.
  4. Freshness is key: Use freshly roasted and ground beans. This ensures that the hazelnut aroma and subtle notes are optimally preserved.

Recommendations for Coffee Accessories

  1. Quality coffee grinder: A grinder allows you to grind the beans right before preparation, maximizing freshness and aroma.
  2. Precision kettle: A kettle with temperature settings can help achieve the perfect water temperature.
  3. Filtering method: Whether you choose a French Press, a Pour Over, or an AeroPress – each brewing method has its own advantages and can highlight the aroma in different ways.

Health Benefits and Concerns

What about the health profile compared to conventional coffee?

Advantages

  1. Antioxidant properties: Like conventional coffee, flavored coffees also contain antioxidants that can help protect the body's cells from damage by free radicals.
  2. Mood enhancement: Coffee, flavored or not, contains caffeine, which can lift mood and improve concentration.
  3. Lower sugar addition: People who like their coffee sweet may find that they need less added sugar if they drink a naturally flavored coffee, such as toffee or caramel flavor.

Disadvantages and Concerns

  1. Additional ingredients: Some may contain artificial flavors or sweeteners. It is important to check the ingredient list and coffee blend to ensure no unwanted additives are present.
  2. Allergens: Depending on the type of flavor, some allergens may be present. People with food allergies should be particularly careful.

Myth and Truth

A widespread myth states that flavored coffee is less healthy than conventional coffee. In reality, this heavily depends on the quality of the beans used and the added flavorings. A flavored coffee made with gentle roasting can offer just as many health benefits as others. However, it is important to be aware of the ingredients and choose coffee beans from trustworthy sources.
