Why is coffee from "Erste Tegernseer Kaffeerösterei" different?

Warum ist Kaffee von der
„Ersten Tegernseer Kaffeerösterei“ anders?

The difference between specialty and industrial coffees cannot be explained in a single sentence. Just like roasting our specialty coffees, it takes time. We recommend you take that time and learn some interesting facts about coffee quality in our country.

The Erste Tegernseer Kaffeerösterei is part of a small, very active international network of coffee enthusiasts. We all share the same goal: we want to improve coffee quality in our countries – and at the same time enable coffee farmers to achieve higher returns.

Many coffees are therefore imported directly or together with our friendly roasters. We buy directly from the farmer, so our coffees are not traded on the stock exchange and no one else profits from them except the transport company. The money thus goes to the people who truly deserve it: the coffee farmers. Our close collaboration allows us to jointly purchase complete “lots” and share them among ourselves. This enables us to constantly offer many exceptionally good coffees. True to our motto: “We don’t have to eat strawberries in November,” we also don’t store coffee to have it constantly available. We roast and sell it. When a variety is out of stock, we look forward to the next harvest.

Gentle Drum Roasting

We at “Erste Tegernseer Kaffeerösterei” and Café “Felix” focus exclusively on sourcing and processing very high-quality, exquisite specialty coffees. These are carefully selected by us and subjected to a traditional, gentle long-term drum roasting until the optimal point is reached where up to 1000 different aromas of each coffee bean have fully developed. After perfect preparation by a trained barista, you can then enjoy them in your cup.

Our focus is on single-origin, i.e., unblended, highland coffees.

Depending on the harvest season of individual coffee-growing countries, we carry approximately 40 different Single Origins and Single Estates, including highly awarded and strictly limited coffee rarities from the “Cup of Excellence”. In addition, we combine some of these varieties into delicious espresso blends. So that you can enjoy your favorite coffee freshly roasted at home, we grind it as needed, suitable for the respective preparation method, and package it to preserve its aroma.

Only trained baristas work at our coffee machines – every year we meet at coffee championships or during joint plantation visits and exchange our knowledge. This benefits you as a guest.

Did you know?
This is what the coffee world looks like outside Café Felix.

mario-felix-liebold-1Coffee is still the most popular beverage among Germans – even ahead of water, beer, wine, and tea. Each of us drinks an average of four cups per day, 165 liters per year. Surprisingly, however, with no other beverage is the price so closely scrutinized, and purchases made based on price. In terms of both quality and price, coffee in Germany has now reached a low point that can hardly be undercut.
With a coffee tax of €2.19 per 1 kg of roasted coffee and a VAT of 7%, consumers today rightly wonder what kind of coffees might be in the packages of low-cost providers. The answer is quite simple: low-quality green coffees are sourced, among other places, from Vietnam at about 0.04 US$ (!) per kg.

This product must first be made palatable with the help of vaporization, so that the industry can "shock roast" it in 90 seconds at 600°C. The green coffee is treated with steam, which opens the pores and dissolves the acids and bad aromas. This way, large roasters can also use green, unripe, and rotten beans.

Due to the short roasting time, roasting irritants remain in the coffee and are consumed by the consumer. The result is often a sour taste, relatively little aroma, and heartburn. Since the coffee is also often sold ground, it is no longer recognizable as low-quality to the end consumer. It is not uncommon for these coffees to then be stretched with maltodextrin and caramel. In the packaging of some industrial roasters, there are sometimes more than 10% of these additives.

Therefore, choose a coffee that truly deserves its name.

In our assortment you will find only first-class quality, from filter coffee to espresso, from cane sugar from Mauritius to a siphon coffee maker, and from coffee grinders to scales.
